The Huon Rowing Club first operated as a rowing club under the name of the Franklin Rowing Club. This was established in 1906, at the current site on the picturesque Huon River, in the small township of Franklin. Franklin lies approximately 50km south of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. The Huon Valley is a region once known world wide for APPLES, these days although apple orchards still dot the valley, Aquaculture is the major growth industry and on land farming has become more varied. Rowing has a strong and proud tradition in the region with competitions having been run between whale boats etc in the later 1800's until popularity of the rowing shell as we recognise it today arose. The rowing club is the only one in Tasmania to actually lie beside a 2000 metre racing course. The Huon River Course was the premier course in Tasmania until the building of the Lake Barrington International Course. This makes the club an ideal training venue and it is utilized by many of the Hobart Clubs and Schools as well as The Tasmanian Institute of Sport. In the lead up to the 1990 World Rowing Championships the French National Team used the club as a training venue and during the 1998, 1999 and 2000 the club has been used by the Australian Senior A Lightweight Four as their principle training venue.
