happy place where community involvement is encouraged and respected.

Kururrungku (Billiluna) is a remote community approximately 180kms. south east of Halls Creek, and was established in 1978/79 when an excision for the community was made from the Billiluna pastoral lease, which had just been acquired for Aboriginal interests. Prior to this there had not been a community as such living at what was known as Billiluna Station.

In 1978 more Walmajarri people began moving back to their traditional land, which had now become a safe place for them to live. Only a few people had experienced "mission" life, and were familiar with the Catholic message. A number of people had met the priests from Balgo as they travelled around collecting children for school, and the priests from Balgo later made reasonably regular visits to families, who had been associated with the "mission". As the community was becoming established, they began asking for a school for their children.

In 1978 Fr Ray Hevern, from Balgo, and John Reid from EDWA, attended a meeting to discuss possibilities of establishing a school. As a result of that meeting the community asked Fr Ray Hevern to investigate the possibility of securing some Catholic sisters, who would be prepared to start school. In 1984 the first baptisms into the Catholic Church took place at Billiluna. The first and only Confirmation ceremony took place in 1988, when eighteen adults were confirmed.
