Half way between Broome and Alice Springs, in both the Great Sandy and Tanami Deserts, is the Kutjungka Region.

The desert has been home to the nomadic Kukatja, Jaru, Walmajarri, Ngarti and Pintipi people for more than 40 000 years. First European contact was made with German Catholic missionaries from the Pallottine congregation  in 1939.

They founded Balgo, the largest village, in 1942. It became self-governing in 1984, spawning the other villages of the region. The links remain very strong. Kutjungka means one people in Kukatja.

People are proud to be strong in their distinct cultural identity as Desert People and their Catholic Christianity. We hope these pages give you an insight into the faith and life of our vibrant Spirit-filled parish.

There are three major communities in the Kutjungka Region: Wirrimanu (Balgo), Malarn (Mulan, Lake Gregory), Kururrungku (Billiluna),  These three communities comprise the Kutjungka Catholic Parish. The region has a population of about 1000 people living in four major centers.
