The "Bat Flower" or "Batplant" (tacca chantrieri) is a native of New Guinea
and Malaysia and seems to grow okay in Darwin. We have the large
white type as shown here and also a smaller version with black flowers.
This plant had only flowered once previously, whilst in a
pot, and there was only one flower. It was then planted directly
into the garden and now has produced 3 flowers at once.
According to local tribes, the plant has mystical powers, however, the uses
and purposes of the plant are shrouded in secrecy. Batplants
need to be kept moist all the time and thrive in high humidity.
They need to be in a shaded spot with no direct sunlight. |
