The following are the major milestones in the development of the Lutheran Church in Devonport, Tasmania.
MINISTRY MILESTONES
1949 - Visiting ministers from mainland Australia began conducting Lutheran services on a semi-regular basis in Hobart, with occasional visits to the North West coast region.
1952 - A resident minister was appointed to live in Hobart and serve Lutherans in the whole of Tasmania. Services were conducted monthly in the homes of mainly immigrant Lutherans from Europe, living on the North West coast of Tasmania. Ministers who served Tasmania in this capacity were:
  • 1952 to 1955 - Pastor Albert Wundersitz
  • 1956 to 1962 - Pastor Lawrence Grieger
1959 - A second Lutheran minister was appointed to live in Launceston. A parish encompasing Launceston and the North West coast was established. Ministers who served congregations in Launceston, Devonport and Burnie were:
  • 1959 to 1965 - Pastor Robert Thiele
  • 1966 to 1970 - Pastor Robert Kempe
  • 1971 to 1975 - Pastor John Schultz
  • 1976 to 1978 - Pastor Robert Voigt
1979 - A third Lutheran minister was appointed to live in Burnie, and serve congregations in Burnie and Devonport with occasional visits to the West Coast to serve Lutheran families who, from time to time, worked in the mining industry. Ministers who have served the North West Lutheran parish are as follows:
  • 1979 to 1981 - Pastor Robert Voigt
  • 1981 to 1984 - Pastor Gunis Balodis
  • 1985 to 1992 - Pastor Arthur Rathjen
  • 1993 to 1997 - Pastor Andrew Brook
  • 1998 to 1999 - Pastor David Grulke
  • 2000 to 2002 - Pastor Thomas Böhmert
  • 2003 to 2004 - Various Interim Ministers
1987 - A parish worker was appointed to assist the minister in the development of the Devonport congregation. People who worked in this position were:
  • 1987 to 1991 - Mr Alan Mackenzie
  • 1992 to 1994 - Mr Paul Ridley
2004 - With rising costs and many younger members leaving the area to pursue wider employment opportunities elsewhere, the decision was made to re-amalgamate with the Launceston Lutheran congregation to maintain the financial viability of the northern Tasmania Lutheran congregations. A parish encompasing the Launceston, Burnie and Devonport congregations became official on 23 May 2004, with a new minister called to live in Burnie. Ministers who have served the North Tasmania Lutheran Parish are as follows:
  • 2005 (Current) - Pastor Richard Schwedes
BRICKS AND MORTAR MILESTONES
1960 - Land was purchased at 10 Parker St, Devonport for a proposed worship centre.
1962 - Building of a worship centre in Parker St was completed and dedicated.
1991 - An annex was added to the Parker St building to cater for meetings, children and youth ministries, and extra capacity for services.
1999 - A disused warehouse was purchased at 93 Forbes St, Devonport and converted to a church centre.
2000 - The opening service of the new Forbes St centre was held in April.
2002 - The old Parker St building was sold.
