Hobart Church History Previous Screen
The following are the major milestones in the development of the Lutheran Church in Hobart, Tasmania.
MINISTRY MILESTONES
1911 - Ministers from mainland Australia established contact with a small group of Lutherans in the Collinsvale area (then called Bismarck) near Hobart. Visits continued until 1915.
1949 - Visiting ministers from mainland Australia began conducting Lutheran services on a semi-regular basis in Hobart, with occasional visits to other parts of Tasmania.
1952 - A resident minister was appointed to live in Hobart and serve Lutherans in the whole of Tasmania, until a second minister was appointed to live in Launceston in 1959 to serve the North and North West coast regions of Tasmania. Ministers who have served in Hobart are:
  • 1952 to 1955 - Pastor Albert Wundersitz
  • 1956 to 1962 - Pastor Lawrence Grieger
  • 1963 to 1969 - Pastor George Doecke
  • 1969 to 1976 - Pastor Dennis Obst
  • 1976 to 2001 - Pastor John Heidenreich
  • 2001 (current) - Pastor Ben Mogg
BRICKS AND MORTAR MILESTONES
1951 - A house was purchased at 79 Barrack St, Hobart to serve as a future manse for a proposed resident minister in Hobart.
1957 - The manse at Barrack St was sold, and another house for that purpose was purchased at 7 Douglas St, New Town.
1957 - Land was purchased in Wilson St, North Hobart for a proposed new church building.
1958 - An existing church at 5 Lefroy St, North Hobart was purchased, with the land purchased the previous year for a church being disposed of.
1965 - The Douglas St manse was sold, and the current manse in 29 Clare St, New Town was purchased.
1973 - The Lefroy St church was sold, and an existing church at 207 Davey St, Hobart was purchased from the Methodist church.
1982 - A Lutheran Primary School was established at Lindisfarne on the eastern shore of Hobart.
