Beagles, as a breed, have been in existance for hundreds of years and sportsmen from every walk of life have enjoyed their company in the hunting field. Although their precise origins are thought to lie in Ancient Greece, it is in the United Kingdom that the breed became popular. The beagle is a scent hound bred to hunt hare and rabbit. They are believed to be the oldest breeds of hounds hunting by scent.

Beagles became quite popular with the British Monarchy over the years, Edward II and Henry VII both kept packs of beagles so small they could fit into a glove. Hence the name "Glove Beagle". Elizabeth I kept packs of "Pocket Beagles" which were quite small in stature measuring only 9" in height at the withers. Over the years Beagles have altered in height etc., and the present day beagles in Australia, follow the English Standard 13" to 16". The USA standard is under 13" and 13" to under 15".

The large eyes and long ears give the Beagle a sad, but appealing expression. Beneath this sad expression lies a merry, mischievous and courageous hound, and their friendly nature makes them ideal family pets. They enjoy company, human, canine or feline and thrive on being part of the houshold.

The late Charles M Schultz, the world renowned cartoonist popularised the beagle in his "Snoopy" cartoons.
