December 2003
There
have been several findings during the year. All not significant in there own
right but collectively they seem to point in to a particular direction. The
first significant item is that I found a record of a union between John
Livingstone and Mary Lawson that our family story telling has related to in the
past. It is on the Mull Family Records web site but there no details. The data input person (a Mr Jeff Fioravanti)
could not through any light on the entry, but it has not been removed. There were no Issues
associated with this record.
1 Further, from a neighbour of a Mr. John
Livingston who died in Hobart recently , she wrote an article about his
residence and part of that article is as follows:
"James
Livingston, whose estate "Maryvale" in Scotland had been in the family
since 1748 1746?, was a cousin of David Livingstone of African fame, but because
one of David Livingstone's brothers was anything but an honourable and
honest citizen and never attended church, he decided to dissociate himself
from that branch by dropping the 'e' from his name."
2 I
then found in a discussion site on Livingstones (Livingstone-L) that a n enquiry
about John Livingstone talked about a place/property name of “Maryhill”
indicating it could be near Tobermory.
3 Now,
all on Mull, are Maryhill and Maryvale same place, adjacent, in the same
district? But Tobermory is very close to Lettermore, the place where John
Livingstone is supposed to have been born!!! Are we getting close?

The next significant item was I was contacted by a Colin Campbell about
someone in his family who was a Livingston hiding as a deserter from the
Napoleonic Wars under the name of Liddell from who he descended. Now, there are
Liddells in the family tree background of my James Livingston who migrated from
Leith to Tasmania. Is this why we can’t find any further trace of John other
than his birthplace in 1777 in Lettermore?
