Samuel
Wells was born
in the Isle of Wight in 1788 and was tried and convicted of horse stealing
at the Wiltshire Assizes on 9 March 1822. He was transported to Sydney
on the Surrey I on its fourth voyage arriving on 4 March 1823. Wells
was assigned to work for Joseph Broadway of Appin (NSW). He subsequently
met and married Catherine Geraty, a convict, on 28 February 1832. After
their marriage Samuel and Catherine resided for a number of years on the
property of Joseph Broadway. They had eight children and of these
four died in early childhood but of the remainder - Ellen
married Joseph Copeland (1854), James
Francis married Catherine Farrell (1857), Samuel
(Jnr) married Elizabeth Muldoon (1865) and Martha
married Jeremiah Pearson (1872).
