TASMAN
POINT
AND SOUTH POINT
You can get to South Point via Tasman Point or via Yenbakwa Homeland Centre (outstation). Try both ways as a round trip, going one way and coming back the other, to work out which you prefer. Both are 4WD only and will take an hour to an hour and a half. Each route is about 50 km from Alyangula or 34 km from the turnoff at the airport/Umbakumba road.
The Yenbakwa route to South Point is quicker, as it is largely on the main south road before going along the beach for about 15 km, including one major creek crossing. The Tasman Point route is mainly through sand after leaving the main south road. It crosses a salt lake area, which is impassable during the Wet.
There is a very nice camping area on a wide, white sandy beach under the shade of casuarina trees at Tasman Point. The sea is safe and shallow for a long way out, so it is ideal for children.
South Point teems with marine fife. It is a very popular spot for fishing, either from a boat or off the cliffs. There are plenty of reef fish and you can also catch mackerel and other pelagics from the cliffs, if you get your line well out.
To reach the cliffs there is quite a long walk over rocks - these are sharp and the cliff can be dangerous, so it is not the best place for small children. There is no shade on the rocks. Well back from the rocky area there is good camping under casuarinas. It is not a large area - you may decide to head a little further along the beach towards Tasman Point.
As the water at South Point is full of sharks, swimming nearby is not recommended! It can be windy and rough at the Point, but if you are there on a calm day there is a magic in looking straight down at so many big fish (and big sharks).
Note
Please observe the courtesy of using the Angurugu bypass road to the main south road as shown, unless you have a reason to go into the community.
