NMH - SAT 22 AUG 1925: "DEATH OF MR G T EDWARDS - NEWCASTLE DEPUTY CORONER" "Mr G T Edwards, deputy coroner of Newcastle, died in the Newcastle Hospital yesterday m orning from hypostatic pneumonia, following on the injuries he received when knocked down b y a motor car in Hunter-street on the evening of August 17. "The late Mr Edwards, who was 67 years of age, was born in Newcastle. He was educated i n Newcastle, and on leaving school entered the office of Mr J C Bonarius, auctioneer, Wolfe s treet. After serving a period with Mr Bonarius, he began business on his own account, and th e first big property sale he conducted was that of the old Protestant Hall at the corner of C rown and King streets, which building was purchased by Mr Jesse Ireland, founder of the fir m of J Ireland Limited. This was about 41 years ago. He received his auctioneer's license a t the same time as the late Mr N B Creer, whose death occurred on Wednesday at Harrowgate, En gland. The late Mr Edwards conducted the sales of large estates at Morrisset and Stockton an d later he and Mr Arthur Tighe entered into partnership. Under the style of Edwards and Tigh e the firm carried on business in Wolfe street for a number of years. On the dissolution o f partnership, Mr Edwards again carried on business on his own account. His office was stil l in Wolfe street, and he also conducted weekly horse and cattle sales in Hunter street West , near the brewery, and on the opposite side of the street there conducted a horse and vehicl e bazaar. During this later period the sales conducted by him included that of the Hannell E state, Wickham, to the Northumberland Building Society, and he also conducted the sale of thi s property, when subdivided, on behalf of the building society. Later he became associated w ith the firm of Messrs. John Hogan and Sons, Newcastle, as auctioneer. For about twenty year s past he was deputy coroner at Newcastle. As a young man he took an active interest in civi c affairs, and was an alderman in the Wickham Council, and was Mayor for a term. He was firs t Mayor of Wickham to be robed. During his time as Mayor he received the Governor of NSW, Lo rd Jersey, and Lady Jersey, when they visited the municipality. Mr Edwards was a member of t he Masonic Order, and was one of the early secretaries of Lodge Sedgwick, Wickham. "He was possessed of a genial and happy disposition, and made numerous friends. He marr ied Miss Swanson, a Newcastle lady, who pre-deceased him seventeen and a half years ago. H e is survived by two sons, Messrs. George Arthur and Harold Ernest Edwards, and two daughters , Mrs H Humphries and Mrs H Vincer. He had lived with Mrs Humphries in recent years. The fu neral will take place to-morrow afternoon, leaving the residence of Mrs Humphries, 21 Denison -street, Hamilton, for Sandgate Cemetery." NMH - MON 24 AUG 1925: "FUNERAL OF G T EDWARDS" "There was a large and representative gathering yesterday afternoon at the funeral of th e late Mr G T Edwards, deputy coroner, which moved from the residence of his daughter, Mr s H R Humphries at 21 Denison-street, Hamilton, to the Presbyterian Cemetery, Sandgate. Rev . D J Flockhart, M A conducted a service at the house prior to the funeral, and afterwards a t the graveside. the chief mourners were Mesdames H R Humphreys and H Vincer (daughters), Me ssrs G A & H E Edwards (sons), Mesdames T Proctor and T Taylor (sisters), and Messrs. Alfre d and Henry Edwards (brothers). The pall-bearers were Messrs H Muller, E Edwards, F Appleb y and L Humphreys.
