Notes : On Sunday, 15 December 1872, Thomas Ward had a "fall from a horse" at the Hay Racecourse, when his saddle-girth gave way. The fall broke his spine "between the shoulders", causing "instantaneous death". Dr. Gordon attended the scene of the accident.
