Twins Philipp and Ursula Ettinger
were born on the 11th March 1827, in a small village of Winkel,
Rüdesheim, Germany. Philipp the son of Philipp Ettinger, the weaver and
Barbara Dietrich. On 11 November 1854, he married Elizabetha Schweikert
of the same village. Elizabetha was born on 6th March 1834, daughter of
Franz Schweikert and Clare Klotz. |

Newspaper Amtsblatt,
dated 7th October 1854, announced the departure of Philipp Ettinger
on the 4th October 1854, from Winkel. Translation "The single male
Philipp Ettinger of Winkel intends to emigrate to Australia, 4 October
1854." Niederwald
a hill close to Rüdesheim am Rhein, southwest foothills
of the Taunus, between Rüdesheim and Assmannshausen, vineyards were
grown on the southern slopes. The Rheingau, villages and
small towns on the right shore of the river Rhein, down stream from the
city of Wiesbaden, it was a great wine growing area in the Dukedom of
Nassau, Hessen. The village of Winkel has preserved its characteristic
aspect, now part of Oestrich-Winkel, this is the area that Philipp and
Elizabetha came from and so named their home Niederwald at Canley Vale,
Sydney, Australia.
Philipp and his friend Aloys
Diener applied for naturalization on 4the June 1869, stating they wished
to purchase a house and land. They were both naturalized on the 16th
July 1869, at Tambaroora, Hill End was one of the richest gold
mining areas in New South Wales.
Philipp came to Australia to seek his fortune but
but only made enough to keep his family; when he became ill he sold his mining claim to a
fellow German, Bernard Holtermann, who struck it rich a few days later. Philipp
packed up, sold his home and with his family returned to Germany
in 1871.When Philipp recovered his health and after the birth of his
daughter Barbara, they came back to Australia in 1873, settling first at
Old Guildford than at Canley Vale.
