Civilization 3

Sid Meier's Civilization 3 has been on 30th Oct 2001.  Civ 3 was developed by Firaxis and published by Infogrames.  In addition to the 2 victory conditions of previous games (Conquest and Spaceship), Civ 3 has 4 new victory conditions and any victory condition can be "turned off" except for Histograph victory.  The new victory conditions are:

  • Domination (controlling 75% of the landmass)
  • UN Victory (being voted leader)
  • Culture victory (achieving a certain number of culture points and having more than twice your rivals culture points)
  • Histograph victory (essentially the highest score if no-one wins any other way)

The interface has been improved with fewer pop-up windows.  The game includes the new concept of Culture, which you gain from certain buildings.  Culture expands your borders and makes rivals like you more.  Strategic resources are a new addition which are found on the map in clusters and if within your borders, supplies all cities connected to it.

Units now have resource prerequisites as well as technology prerequisites.  Luxuries are also available and help keep, your population content.  The concept of ranged attacks and armies (groups of units fighting together) and leaders have been added.  Leaders are created occasionally when an elite unit wins a battle.  These leaders can create armis or rush buildings.  Firepower has been removed, and Hit Points (HP) no longer depend on what type of unit, but now its status.

  • Conscript units have 2 HP
  • Regular units have 3 HP
  • Veteran units have 4 HP
  • Elite units have 5 HP

The Trade & Diplomacy system has been completely overhauled.  Caravans are no more and deals can be mixed and matched however the player likes including technologies, gold (per turn or lump sum), maps, strategic resources, luxuries, units, contact with other civs, cities, and treaties (Peace, Mutual Protection Pact, Right of Passage Agreement, Military Alliance and trade embargoes).

Civilizations have been given unique units and two of six characteristics providing unique (to that characteristic) benefits.  The 6 characteristics are:

  • Militaristic (Reduced military building costs & Unit promotions more likely)
  • Commercial (Extra trade in city center & Lower Corruption)
  • Expansionist (Better results from goody huts & Free scout at start)
  • Scientific (Free tech at the beginning of each new era & Reduced science building costs)
  • Religious (Reduced costs for religious buildings & No anarchy in revolutions)
  • Industrious (Workers work faster & Extra production in city center)

Minor wonders have been added which can be built by every player.  The Fundamentalism government has been removed (leaving the original five Civ 1 governments)  Finally, the Nationalism tech allows you to set your economy for war economy
