President’s Report

Well done Mitcham athletes and families on completing another season of Little Athletics!

I would particularly like to congratulate those families new to Little Athletics this season for their enthusiastic participation in the athletics program and the parent’s roster. I hope you will continue to enjoy your involvement in Little Athletics for many seasons to come. Congratulation also to those families who maintained their long term commitment to Little Athletics. It is through ongoing participation in the program that your children benefit the most.

Being president this season has been an interesting and challenging experience! I enjoyed that fact that I was better able to get to know the names and faces of Mitcham families through the hands-on tasks I performed, such as taking registrations at the start of the season, making sure events were manned each week, and getting refreshments out to parents on duty. (I will never forget which parent has black coffee with three sugars!)

This season presented a significant challenge in that 30 fewer athletes registered with the club than last season, making the duty roster difficult to maintain. In addition, 13 athletes dropped out after Christmas, depleting the ranks of roster volunteers even further. These factors made the contribution of those parents who helped out each week even more important. I especially commend those who filled in week after week as our roster fell into disarray during the second half of the season.

This year’s committee members deserve praise for keeping the club going for another year. Many thanks to:

Ian Laurie (treasurer & NLAC age group manager)
Peter McDonald
John Magree (roster coordinator & NLAC track & field team manager)
Ian Mallick (secretary)
Nicole Mallick (newsletter)
Michelle Miller (recorder & fundraising)
Jayne Noble (fundraising)
Mary Raphael (fundraising)
Leyna Raath (uniforms)

I also applaud those who, although not taking part in the Mitcham committee, have performed valuable roles at the NLAC level:

Celia Brenchley (age group manager)
Jenny Fawkes (coach)

Unfortunately not all of this year’s committee members will be able to continue in their roles next season, so if this club is to stay in existence we will need more volunteers for the committee. Tonight we will need to appoint a new Secretary, Roster Coordinator, Team Manager (which was vacant this season), and at least one general committee member.

I urge those who have not yet volunteered for committee roles to consider how they could help. It is your children, after all, who benefit from participation in Little Athletics. Your own participation would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, I hope all Mitcham athletes were able to achieve their personal goals for this season and that they are looking forward to further competition next season. I also hope they don’t forget to thank their families for supporting them in their activities throughout the season!

Lyn McKelvie
President, MLAC.

Recorder’s report

This season Mitcham Club registered 97 athletes; 64 boys and 33 girls.  In all 152 ribbons were awarded to athletes as follows:

Green                      87

Red                         51

Blue                        14

Once again competition was high with records being rewritten, often in the same day.  Notably amongst these was Natalie Laurie and James Quirk.  Natalie Laurie excelled in Javelin and in the 1500 metres race and walk.  James Quirk broke records in the 70, 100 and 400 metres race.  The 70 metres race record was shared by James Quirk, Hadyn Judge and Matthew Knoops.

Christine Dalton is proving to be a talent in hurdles breaking the 300 and 80 metres hurdles records.

Single event record breakers were D’Arcy Miller in 50 metres, Alex Magree in the 50 metres, Carl Sieger in the 700 metres race, Cassandra Taylor in the 80 metres hurdles and Hugh Barton in the long jump.  Leigh Fawkes demonlished a 17 year old record for the 1500 metres walk.

This year was the first time U16 athletes competed at the track on a Saturday morning.  Many records were broken although were not officially acknowledged.

The State Track and Field Championships were held on March 15th at Olympic Park.  All athletes performed admirably and the following made it through to finals:

James McKelvie                   U15 boys               shot put                 9th            10.80

Leigh Fawkes                        U15 boys               1500MW                2nd        6.58

Natalie Laurie                        U12 girls                1500MW                2nd           8.16

Lachlan Magree                   U9 boys                 70M                        5th

Leigh Fawkes                        U15 boys               discus                    15th          31.18

Natalie Laurie                        U12 girls                Javelin                    17th          15.22

Congratulations to the U15 boys who graduate to seniors next year.  Most have been competing for Nunawading in the senior division this year.  We have enjoyed their enthusiasm and hope some of this rubs off on our younger athletes.  It is obvious that a lot of friendships have been made amongst the boys and we hope that they continue into adulthood.
