My Journey - from "Silence to Sound"

Finally Updated 26th March 2006 - 3 years later

Thanks again for all those people who continue to check in on this site to see what has changed. Of course very little changes have occured as the site has been left very much untouched for some two years. I still continue to gladly receive emails from people all over the world who stumble on to this site.

Since the last update I have completed my Grad Dip Ed and have spent 2005 working full time as a high school teacher in Cobar - Far west NSW. Commenced as a music teacher but due to further rapid decline in my left ear hearing levels, left that position and stayed on in Cobar for the full year as a full time relief teacher.

At the start of 2006 Jackie and I moved home to Lismore where we are currently expecting our first child anytime soon. I am currently focusing on further studies in a Master of Special Education (sensory disability) program through the Royal Institute of Deaf and Blind Children with the view to entering the hearing impaired teaching field in some capacity. The NSW Dept of Education has been kind enough to allow me to take leave with out pay from the service enabling me to return to the system towards end of 2006.

So currently I am doing a little guitar tutoring with Primary school kids and am waiting for the baby to arrive - we plan that I will be a house dad and attempt to keep studying as I am completing uni part time via distance education.

The implant is still going well - considering whether I might get the other ear implanted at some time in next few years as the useful hearing in the hearing aid ear (left) is becoming les and less useful but will wait and see now.

I don't expect that I will update the site at all in the near future but wanted to let people know what was happening.

Regards, Michael Harrison
