The opposition's centre forward is usually high on the list of team defensive planning and strategy priorities. The following have all been tried.

Crashing Outside defeders push into the space where and when the ball is passed into the CF. The rules interpretations at the moment mean that, on most occasions, the defence will be allowed to steal the ball.
Fronting The centre-back plays ball side of the CF, and with pressure outside, the shot clock rolls on without the CF getting the ball in a good strike zone. The goalkeeper has to be ready to steal.
Push out The centre-back pushes the CF as far away from the goal as possible, closing in on the perimeter palyers and away from the goals
Swimming Usually bigger, usually stronger, usually slower. Clever defences swim and drive off the centre forward as much as possible - thus tiring the CF and exposing the CF to a kickout
