N L A C 2006 Cross Country Season Information sheet Cross Country is usually held on Sundays between 10.00 am. to 12.00 noon at various locations, in the eastern metropolitan area. If you are unfamiliar with the track, it is a good idea to arrive at 9.30 am and walk around the course before the race. Maps of the courses are displayed at venues before all races. Under 6, 7 & 8 children have a "hare" leading their races and a 'tortoise' to make sure no one gets lost or left behind! Girls and boys both run the same distances but the events may be combined or separated or changed. There are two programmes, A and B, as per the calendar. Under 6: 500 metres Under 11 & 12: 2000 metres Under 7 & 8: 1000 metres Under 13, 14 & 15: 3000 metres Under 9 & 10: 1500 metres Cross country events (excluding Open Days) are FREE to athletes who were registered for the summer track and field season. For those who did not compete at Nunawading over summer, there is a cost to cover registration and insurance. Please note that there are no individual clubs at cross country. Everyone competes for the Nunawading centre. Uniform consists of the green centre singlet and black shorts. In cold weather a black t-shirt may be worn under the singlet. During the season the different centres hold Open Days. On these days there is an entry fee to compete, usually around $5-$8. Medals are awarded to individuals and teams finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd. We aim to have teams of at least 3 athletes per age group event so that we can also try for team medals. Nunawading will host the Eastern Region Championship in 2006 and our usual open day. We will need parents to help run our Open Day. Parents from the Other Centres will also be rostered to help on Region Day. Duties include: early set up of the course, starter, recording, course marshals, timekeepers, finish marshals and canteen duties. The roster is distributed a couple of weeks beforehand. Both Region and State Championships are held for cross country. All athletes may compete at Region, but only those in the Under 9 - 15 age groups officially compete at State. There is an invitation event at State for the Under 7's and 8's. Nunawading is required to provide some officials on both these days. You may be rostered to do duty at either or both Region and State. Athletes who don't compete at Region cannot compete at the State Championships. How we calculate the Trophy winners in each age group/ sex at the end of the Season: Place at an event: 1st: 20 points, 2nd: 16 points 3rd: 12 points 4th: 8 points Attendance for : 5th and subsequent: 5 points Places at an event are based only on the relative placings of Nunawading athletes. That is: 1st Nunawading athlete gets 20 points, second gets 16 etc. If there are Relays then only attendance points are awarded. There are 13 events on our calendar. To allow for sickness and other absences, only the athletes best 10 results will be counted. Countbacks, if required will be based on the best 11 results, then if necessary, best 12, then best 13. If still a tie, then they will each get a trophy! Some Centres allow an athlete to run in a higher age group. If an athelete wants to run in a higher age group, then they score the points from that event into their own age group. For example: Under 10 Boy runs in Under 11 and is the third Nunawading athlete in that event he would score 12 points towards the U10 trophy. The Under 11 boys would score 20, 16,8 towards theirs. |
