Little Athletics: Fun and fitness |

CROSS COUNTRY SEASON 2005 The 2005 season was very successfully for the Nunawading athletes. Our team comprised of 65 registered runners, with nearly 50 of these competing on a regular basis. All athletes who participated should be proud of the way they competed on some difficult courses, giving evidence to the Little Athletics motto "Family, Fitness, Fun." The strong support offered by the families of those competing turns many Sunday mornings into social gatherings as well as sporting events, and all Centres who make up the Eastern Metropolitan Region (EMR) need to be thanked for the friendly and cooperative atmosphere which makes the events run smoothly. High on the list of highlights of the Cross Country season are the Open Days. As well as providing an opportunity to compete against a wider field of runners, as many Centres outside EMR are represented, there is the chance to compete in a team event. There were many fantastic individual performances at these events, but my strongest memories are from the number of Nunawading kids who received a medal by making up the second or third leg of a successful team. The support shown towards any competitors wearing the green Nuna' uniform by those in other age groups is just fantastic in a sport that is largely dominated by individual performances. The Region Championships were held at Doncaster and Nunawading featured very strongly, collecting 4 individual and 4 team medals. We then had 30 athletes who qualified for the State Championships to be held at Hanging Rock on the 31st July. In a fantastic race, Adrian McLean surged to a 5 metre lead with only the last hill remaining and held on to win the Under 15 3000m title - CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEW STATE CHAMPION!! Other great results from the State Championships were;
Congratulations to all athletes who competed over the season. The different courses and changing terrain provided a new challenge each week, as well as running a longer distance than during the track season. I encourage all of you to come back next season!! A final note to all of the parents who provided support and assistance on some very cool Sunday mornings. Without your help the sport of Cross Country would not be possible. So on behalf of your sons and daughters Thank you for recording, timing, marshalling, setting up, packing up, cheering, driving, cooking and supporting us for the season. Peter Wright Team Manager |
