Our Lady of Fatima Church Kingsgrove

'We give you thanks, Lord God, for this Church'

behind the altarI would like to take this wonderful opportunity to say 'thanks' to God for the many blessings he has bestowed upon this community. Also it is a time to say 'thank you' for the vision of Monsignor Michael Cronin and the generosity of the people of God in Kingsgrove - Bexley North, to build one of the most beautiful and unusual Churches in the country.

According to the architects Maclurcan and Brown it was the first church in Australia, and one of the first in the world, to have a central altar. The Church was built to seat 1,750, making it one of the biggest in the Archdiocese of Sydney. The Church was consecrated by Cardinal Gilroy on September 7, 1970m when it was not fully completed.

The church was built in an era of great liturgical change, just following the Second Vatican Council. The changes in the Liturgy had one object in view, the full and active participation of the people, so that they become a vital community, especially in the central action of the Liturgy - the offering of the Eucharist.

Without hesitation we can say that the Kingsgrove Church has been very well used over the years and there have been many wonderful liturgies, especially from the school communities who are part of the parish family. It is a Church where no one is too far away from the altar, this allows people to feel much part of the celebration.
