At Our Lady of Fatima Parish Kingsgrove children are prepared for the sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation through family-centred, parish based sacramental programmes.
This means that parents are involved in preparing their children for the sacraments through programmes implemented and supported by the parish.
Preparation includes formation evenings for parents only and small group meetings in the home at which both parents and children participate.
At what age do children prepare for Sacraments?
The usual age for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist is when the child reaches year 3 and for Confirmation, year 6. Children of other ages will be considered on consultation with the Sacramental Programme Coordinator.
Rationale
Many parents ask why they need to be involved in their child’s sacramental preparation, particularly if they have sent their child to a catholic school.
The following statement endorses the view that parents are the primary educators of their children in the development of their faith.
| In his “Exhortation on the Christian family in the modern world” Pope Paul VI states:
“The Christian family is the first community called to announce the gospel to the human person during growth and to bring him or her through a progressive education and catechesis to full human and Christian maturity”. |
It is also the role of the church community to nurture the faith of each of its baptised members. Hence a Parish Sacramental Team has been appointed to work with families to ensure that effective preparation takes place and all members of the parish are encouraged to practically support the sacramental process.
What do I have to do for my child to participate in Sacramental Preparation?
If you wish your child to participate in the sacramental programmes in 2005 you should submit an enrolment application by the end of 2004. Please ring the sacramental coordinator, Teresa Macpherson on 9554-5752 or email on macphsn@optushome.com.au for more information.
