The Malay family of  Westbury, Tasmania

It is not clear when John arrived at Westbury. In August 1834 he was living at Norfolk Plains near Longford.

His freedom was granted on 15 June 1838. His conduct record contains no other information.

On 9 May 1842, John Malay married Mary Ann Fitzpatrick "according to the Rites and ceremonies of the Church of England by Banns" at the Westbury Police Office. Rev John Bishton was the Minister.

The town was barely established. As a tradesman plasterer  John  found some work in the building of public offices, churches and stately homes owned by those who had benefited from  Governor Arthur's extensive land grants.

John and Mary Ann had two sons - John born in 1847, and Edward born in 1845.Mary Ann died at Westbury on 2 February 1849 from "debility from miscarriage".
