Alfred George O'Malley was born to Myles and Janet O'Malley at Waratah, Tasmania in January, 1915.
Alf was not a strong child and a very bitter winter in Waratah encouraged Myles and Janet to relocate to Melbourne. Originally they lived in South Melbourne, moving to Dromana in the early 1920's.
Young Alf attended the Dromana Primary School with his other brothers and sisters. Children were required to attend school to age 14, but tuition did not go beyond sixth grade. Mr Wiseman was the school Principal and Miss Chapman his teacher.
Notwithstanding his limited education, Alf's handwriting was immaculate his writing, spelling and arithmetic were of a very good standard and he could recite quite reasonable prose. He was a skilled axeman, fence builder, tree feller, and trench digger. He had good mechanical, electrical and plumbing skills and could drive any heavy vehicle. He was always ready to help those less fortunate than himself. A hard worker, he refused to give in to the pain and injury suffered through his work.
