Grammar for Language
Lovers
The art and
science of the sentence
"A
perfectly healthy sentence, it is true,
is extremely
rare" -- Henry David Thoreau
These lessons are nothing like what you may remember from school. This is grammar for adults who want to regain control of the English language, or make up for never having learned grammar in the first place.
The basic building block of all writing is the sentence. Word by word, phrase by phrase, clause by clause, every sentence tells a story, each one almost always different from the next. The variety is infinite. No mindless, repetitive exercises here. Instead, we will see how the language really works by following the flight of The Transitive Vampire, Karen Gordon's handbook for language lovers.
Learn to put participles in their place by pursuing the passions of the debutante in the silver frock, the honest charlatan, the dowager, and the hedonist. Better yet, populate your writing exercises with your own cast of characters. You may emerge from this course with a poem or a short story.
This practical course suits creative writers and anyone
who wants to enjoy learning almost everything about the English sentence.
While designed to be entertaining and enjoyable, Grammar
for Language Lovers will suit the staff-training
needs of organisations that employ writers or that require
good language skills and creativity from staff.
Teachers and university lecturers can take the course
and re-use my materials in their classes, as long as
you do not charge students more than the costs of duplicating
the materials and you display my copyright
notices.
