The W.A.A.C. was formed by five active observers in April, 1999, and currently has
more than 32 members. We are based in Wollongong, a city of approximately a quarter of a million people 80 km south of the much larger city of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia.
How the W.A.A.C. Operates
Membership: $15 per year, with absolutely no intention of an increase.
(This includes liability insurance)
Meetings: these are held on the first Thursday of every month at the Unanderra Community Centre. These are generally very informal events where recent and upcoming events are discussed. They are the best opportunity for people new to the hobby of Amateur Astronomy to ask questions. Our members are very friendly and willing to help newcomers. Some telescopes would usually be available for viewing if the night is clear. Very occasionally a guest speaker may be invited.
Newsletter: The Wollongong Observer is published monthly and either given to members at meetings or mailed to all members not able to attend a given meeting. It contains updates of club activities, Astronomical news, general submissions from members (which are strongly encouraged and always very welcome) and photos.
Observing Nights: these are arranged on at least two Saturday nights each month closest to New Moon and Last Quarter. They are held at Jerrara Dam, a site south of Wollongong away from the city lights. These are the best opportunity for members to do serious deep-sky observing and astrophotography.
Equipment: None. Zilch. Zero. The club owns nothing apart from some coffee and tea supplies for meetings. Our members have an extensive range of telescopes and related accessories (see the Telescopes page) which are all privately owned. Our biggest resource is our people, who are always ready to give newcomers a look through their equipment and help them decide what they might like to get for themselves. For those 'do it your-selfers', the club has a wealth of experience in telescope-making.
The Web Site: the web site you are accessing has been created, maintained and updated by Paul Brown since the club's inception. You can access the website to learn about upcoming events It contains links to other Astronomy websites. Paul also loves to receive members' photos to add to the socialising and astrophotography pages.
The Wollongong Amateur Astronomy Club welcomes visitors, either experienced observers or beginners. If you're looking for a friendly atmosphere to learn more about Amateur Astronomy simply contact us and drop in to a meeting.
The Wollongong Amateur Astronomy Club is only one of a network of amateur astronomical organisations throughout Australia. Links to these organisations can be found at the website of the Astronomical Society of New South Wales.
