HOW CAN I GET MY LICENCE

In the ACT, learners can choose between the LOGBOOK system via the Competency Based Training and Assessment (CBT&A) program or attempt a one-off test with a government examiner.

The CBT&A program is a comprehensive system of learning to drive with an accredited driving instructor who will teach and assess 22 driving competencies. Each competency is signed and stamped off by the instructor. Once the Logbook is completed a separate certificate is issued and these two documents are presented by the learner at a Government Shopfront or the RTA at Dickson. The appropriate fee is then paid and your provisional licence is issued.

Skilltech instructors can also prepare a learner for a one-off test which is conducted by an independent government examiner. Tests are conducted at either the RTA Dickson (Challis Street) or from the Government Shopfront at Homeworld, Tuggeranong. Learners can choose to attempt the one-off test in their own car or the instructor's car.

NSW learners do not have access to the ACT's CBT&A program. Instead they must sit for the one-off test at the Queanbeyan or Yass RTA. The test can only be attempted after having logged 120 driving hours which must be recorded in a Logbook issued by RTA

OUR RESPONSIBILITIES TO LEARNERS

Fees: At the commencement of training, learners will be informed of the fee per lesson or package of lessons. Fee increases may occur during the term of instruction, however learners will be given two week's notice of such fee increases. Should a learner not wish to continue with a package of prepaid lessons, a refund of the balance of prepaid lessons will be provided, within six months of the last scheduled lesson.

Code of Practice & Code of Ethics: Skilltech instructors will comply with the ACT Government's Code of Practice and the Australian Driver Trainers Association (ACT)'s Code of Ethics.

Punctuality: Skilltech instructors, will, as far as practicable, ensure that an appointment with a learner for instruction or assessment is not delayed. Where a delay is unavoidable the instructor shall endeavour to contact the learner by telephone to advise of the extent of the delay. Instructors shall provide an opportunity for the student to cancel the appointment and make a new one.

Courtesy: Skilltech instructors will behave courteously, and will not harass, abuse or threaten learners when providing instruction or assessment.

Presentation of Vehicle: Skilltech instructors will provide learners with a vehicle which is registered and roadworthy and is also clean and tidy, having regard to prevailing weather conditions. HOW LEARNERS CAN HELP US

Fees: Payment of the lesson fee should be made at the time of the lesson. Payment for a package of lessons should be made at the time of the first lesson. Payment can be made by cash or cheque. If possible cheques should be made out in the name of the instructor. Fees imposed by the bank for bad cheques will be charged to the learner (or the cheque drawer).

Cancellations: Should a learner cancel within 24 hours of the lesson, or not arrive for a lesson, the instructor may impose a late cancellation/non arrival fee equal to the lesson fee if that lesson cannot be re-booked to another learner. A driver training business has very large overheads, so we hope you can appreciate that the loss of income for that lesson, together with other associated costs can be detrimental to an instructor's livelihood.

Punctuality: Learners should be ready to commence the lesson at the booked time. If delayed for some unforeseen reason, learners should attempt to telephone the instructor to advise of the extent of the delay. A lesson may need to be shortened in such circumstances if the instructor has a commitment to another lesson immediately after.

(3) If it is an issue about discrimination, the student can approach the respective ACT/NSW human rights authority.
