Goal
The goal of the Asperger Syndrome Support Group (ASSG) is to
support the parents and families of persons with Asperger's
Syndrome and High Functioning Autism. To achieve this goal the
following objectives shall be pursued.
Objectives
ASSG is a non profit family based benevolent society which
will:
- Provide emotional support and encouragement to families
and persons with Asperger's Syndrome and High Functioning
Autism.
- Foster interaction between Parents of children concerned
and local schools.
- Serve as a centre for the compilation and distribution of
information on Asperger's Syndrome and High Functioning
Autism.
- Engage in public education programmes to inform the
community of the complexity of Asperger's Syndrome and
High functioning Autism.

These are some of the projects ASSG are currently working on.
Volunteers are always welcome to apply their skills!
- Newsletter - Published on a regular basis and circulated
to members, this really keeps you up to date with events,
recommended reading, stories, poems, coffee mornings,
picnics etc. Available as a hardcopy to paid up members.
- Local Group Web Page - This is it. Still evolving to give
you easy access to the best information available.
- Members Information Database - Compiling an easily to
search database of useful information relating to
Asperger Syndrome, books, research papers, diagnosis,
liaison with schools, legal rights and other sources of
outside assistance available e.g. support, government
assistance, voluntary groups. In the mean time we have a
book list available under the Educational
information heading
- The Centre for Research in Neuropsychiatry is currently
running "A New Genetic Study of the Autistic
spectrum". They are looking for families willing to
participate in the study. It involves some of your time
to answer a questionnaire and take part in some tests,
but is actually quite a lot of fun. They can be contacted

Some of the current benefits of being a member of the ASSG
include being kept up to date with the latest developments in the
world of Asperger Syndrome, as well as social events and other
group activities.
- Membership - Currently the Support Group
has a membership of about 50 families. Annual fees are A$20.00,
allowing you access to the learning resources, library
materials and newsletter. You will also be invited to
social events and to attend workshops. As a member you
also are entitled to participate in Group meetings,
become a committee member, vote on group policy and
direction. You can play an active part in assisting the
Group.

- Adult Social Group - ASSG has an Adults
social group for those adults with Asperger's Syndrome.
Meetings are friendly occasions at a variety of venues, a
park, the beach, a favourite cafe, someone's house, where
ever!
Parents Lunches - Pick a Hotel for a
lunchtime get together. There is one coming up soon, so join us
today and ask for details.
Picnics/BBQ's - Even if you don't enjoy the
burnt offerings, you will enjoy the day out. Join us today and
ask for details.
Assistance - What assistance is available for
you and your family. Ask those who know, contact the ASSG.
Workshops - Day or evening workshops, e.g.
Growing up with Asperger's Syndrome from the point of view of
someone who has been through it.
