I was born into a Catholic family, and went to Catholic school until third grade. Even as a child I remember thinking that the whole story of Jesus is an interesting story, but I had a hard time believing it. I also could not believe that the Hindus, Jews, etc. are all going to Hell.
Around the age of 16 or so I stopped going to church, and my parents didn't push me. It was only around the age of 28 that I read A Course in Miracles, and it really spoke to me. I realized that God was not a horrible monster that should be feared, as the fundamentalist Christians would have us believe.
An interesting twist to the story--in 2000, about a year after my divorce I met and started dating a Born Again Christian. I really am not anti-church, and I feel there is a lot to be learned from the teachings of Jesus. So I had no problem with attending church with him. When one of the youth ministers at a neighboring church found out that my boyfriend was dating a non-Born Again, he hit the roof! He said to my boyfriend that he "better not hear" that we were still dating if I did not become Born Again!
My boyfriend then went on a mission to try to convert me! I told him that while I still consider myself "Christian" in the sense that I try live my life as Jesus did, I am not a Born Again nor will I ever be. Believe it or not, we are still together. I attend church with him occasionally, but we have decided to look for a church we can attend together and both be comfortable. We are still looking...
