I spent about 15 years as a nominal christian going to an anglican church mainly because of my wife who had been a christian since she was a little child. I liked the odd sermon but found the rituals boring and meaningless. From Monday to Saturday I gave little thought to religion. Then about five years ago I went to the funeral of one of my peers and I was very impressed by the eulogy given by an evangelical minister. So I said to my wife let's give that church a go. We were both impressed by their enthusiasm and their contemporary approach to religion. I enjoyed going to church more than I ever had in my life.
Although I never believed all of orthodox christian doctrine I nevertheless felt there must be a solid core underneath the the myths and legends. So I spent 18 months reading as much as I could on all sides of the issues. Somewhat reluctantly and with some significant disappointment I came to realize that many of the claims that Christianity makes cannot be substantiated. Even more disheartening, the answers from clergy were usually lame. That is if they even answered my questions at all, because usually I got no response at all. I think they knew I had done my homework and couldn't be brushed off with Josh McDowell type apologetics. In the end I concluded orthodox christianity is intellectually bankrupt (and liberal christianity isn't any better).
