To start, I have no malace toward christians. Also, I think that people who choose or don't choose a religion because of what other people do or think are lost! People are people no matter their beleifs. And no matter what, if you take a large enough sample, you will find hipocrits, child rapists, perverts, liars.... Why would you make such an important decision based on others. Make your decisions based on what YOU think and beleive.
My story: I started to look at Chritianity from an outsiders perspective. I thought, what? so a part of God/or God himself(depending on your doctrine) came down in the form of human for 30 something years. That is just weird and asinine. How does that work exactly? There are so many paradoxes and questions to be answered. What is more likely: that this is a human construct or that this actually happened?
Also, I started to wonder about this idea of sin and the burden of sin. It is so odd. People explain sin as if it is this cosmic force like gravity. It is kept track of and builds up. It is what decides our fate???
I am in medical school and have become a strong observer of people. People want to believe. Also, they are always looking for reasons to explain everything that is going on with them (almost always incorrectly). Does anyone think that the people of zero B.c. were any different? In fact, they were by far less educated due to the nature of the times and early christians were generally the everyday person not the educated.
Also, written text is very inacurate. Observed, scribed...copied...copied again. Most the the new testement documents that are the basis for the bible as we know it were tens of copies down the line. These being copied by the uneducated mentioned above. Plus, why should I assume the original writers were even telling the truth. Even if they were, this was probably just how they saw things. We have the same crap going on today. People thinking that they discoverd the truth (ie. Christian scientist).
Christianity is simply an evolutionary stud. It has the right mix of doom and gloom with forgiveness and understanding that it is able to last the centuries.
