Basically, I encountered nothing but hypocrites in church. There are a few interesting stories. In my catholic high school we had religion class, one time the teacher showed us a film talking about how bad death penalty was. Then she gave us a quiz where the first question was: Why are you agianst death penalty?
I raised my hand and said: I don't understand the first question, I am not against death penalty.
My classmates started talking and all of a sudden, the teacher lost control of the class, then she said: class dismissed. No explanation whatsoever. I went to an expensive school, that was considered above average with very smart students, but we weren't allowed to think when it came to religion.
Another instance, when I was active in the teen group at my local church, some of the kids that used to say how wrong it was to have sex before marriage, or that condoms are evil things, homosexuals are bad people etc... Those kids were the ones that had a bf/gf from church and were caught cheating (we were teenagers and they were already cheating) and a couple girls got preagnant.
Also in my Catholic high school, a 15-y-o classmate got preagnant, the head nun told her and her parents that she'd only be able to attend classes if she wore a sweatshirt over her uniform and never take it out, even inside the classroom and no matter how hot it was outside. That was so she wouldn't be a bad influence to the other kids in the school. The truth is that once I started reading more starting in HS, and specially in college. I realized that the church was always defending their own interests, who knows who wrote the bible? I also read the terrible things the church did to woman, from witch hunt to blaming Eve of being responsible for Adam falling into temptation and even today that women are still subordinate of men.
Contradictions of the bible, priests molesting children, puritanism, disrespecting other religions, the disrespect for homosexuals, and the list goes on and on.... I just can't live my life being controlled by an institution. I make sure every Easter I eat the biggest and juiciest steak I can find! I am happy and my life has never been better knowing that I am in control of my life, instead of some unknown spirit that does nothing but make people live like puppets.
