Of Fardystown, parish of Killdavin, Barony of Forth, County Wexford

Patrick Browne went over to Liverpool in 1822 and was employed in the firm Dickson Montgomery & Co., import and export merchants, with branches in Buenos Aires and Valparaiso.

In the year 1824 the foregoing firm sent Patrick out to the Buenos Aires branch. He sailed from Liverpool in the good ship (brig) "Cossack" of Whitehaven. On arrival off Montevideo the "Cossack" in a heavy gale, struck the "Banco Ingles" and foundered in a few minutes. No lives were lost but my good father, then aged 18, arrived in one of the ship's boats, at Buenos Aires, after suffering much hardship and the loss of all his baggage, the only clothes he had on arrival were those he stood up in.

Richard Browne or Dick, as he was called, was a fighter (as was his great-great-grandson George Hall Browne, who served in the Great War 1914 - 1918 in the Royal Engineers.) He commanded a pike brigade in the celebrated Irish Rebellion of 1798, against the British Crown, and did his "bit" at the battle of Newtown Barry, Co. Wexford. He was a crack shot with the Brown Bess musket used in those days. After the battle he did some very serviceable work as a sniper and picked off a good few officers of the Government troops, as they followed up the rebels. He was not hanged, owing to his being a favourite of the Protestant element in the county.
