About AIPA

The Australian Institute of Professional Archaeologists (AIPA) was founded in 1998 as a national organisation representing the interests of all professional archaeologists who work or are based in Australia.

The Institute serves to provide a broad base for the promotion of professionalism in archaeology, irrespective of location, research discipline, employment basis or experience. AIPA aims to provide a general framework for the development of archaeology as a viable career option, without focusing on specific aspects or sectors of the profession, or detracting from the efforts of specialist groups representing those areas.

AIPA seeks to provide a forum for debate on all topics concerning the practice of archaeology in Australia, and how it relates to political, social and technological developments at home and overseas.

We are in the process of constructing this web site to communicate the aims, ethics, services and activities of AIPA to the archaeological profession, the broader heritage community and the general public.

AIPA is important to all who:

  • have qualified or intend to qualify as archaeologists;
  • are actively engaged in archaeological research, teaching, management or consulting;
  • have an ongoing involvement in the fields of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, historical, classical, maritime and all other branches of archaeology;
  • represent Australian archaeology overseas through consulting or research programs;
  • intend to pursue archaeology as a long term, viable career; and
  • are concerned that Australian archaeology maintains high professional standards and continues its commitment to researching and protecting archaeological heritage in an ethically and culturally sensitive manner.

These references are hyperlinked to the pages they name -- even though the same pages are also listed together in a convenient section at the bottom of this page on links to other pages in this site.

For Employers

Brief intro, then direct potential employers/clients to page on What to Expect from Archaeological Service Providers. That page will be linked to pages on recommended rates, protocols, privacy and terms and conditions.

How to Join AIPA

Mention cost and whether joining/renewing can be done (and paid for) on-line or whether applicants must mail in form, then point visitors to the page containing the page containing the Join AIPA form.
