Batteries used to power electric fences are able to be easily and cheaply kept charged by using SOLAR POWER panels of the correct size. All that is required is to mount the SOLAR PANEL facing the equator on a fence post or star picket, making sure to keep it out of the way of inquisitive stock, and connect the red wire to the battery +ve., and the black wire to battery -ve. The energiser then also connects to the battery, and the SOLAR PANEL keeps the battery charged and the fence operational, 24 hours per day.
SOLAR PANELS are also used to keep fully charged batteries on vehicles in tip top condition so that they will start the vehicle when called upon to do so either for an emergency vehicle such as a rural fire brigade vehicle or the farmer’s tractor.
It is important to have the correct size SOLAR PANEL to suit the Energiser and the length of wire or tape being electrified, for if you don’t, the battery will slowly run down and by the time you become aware of the problem, you are up for the purchase of a new battery - something that the provision of the SOLAR PANEL was supposed to obviate!
Having a SOLAR PANEL larger than that required to just keep up with the energiser is handy too, in that it allows you to use a battery that may have already seen better days, because the larger SOLAR PANEL has a bit more ‘oomph’ to counteract the ‘sluggish’ battery. You can get away with being able to utilise the battery which won’t start the truck but still ‘has a little bit left in it’.
