Note: Please read this page before complaining about something in our articles on body-piercing and tattoos. Common errors readers make when complaining about our articles on tattoos and body-piercing
Every week we receive emails complaining about our articles on body-piercing and tattoos. Despite your criticisms, we love to hear from you. We have altered many of our articles because of good comments from readers. But 90 per cent of complaints people send us are simply wrong. They accuse us of saying things we did not say, or criticize us for something that is not in our articles. So before you send off that email of abuse, please read these comments and make sure you are not about to make the same errors. They make you look silly and they waste our time. Complaint: “Your article is wrong when it says that the Bible forbids piercings.” Answer: We do not say the Bible forbids piercings. In fact we say the opposite. Our body-piercings article says “the Bible does not forbid piercings …” Complaint: “You say the Old Testament forbids tattoos. But that law doesn't apply to Christians. Do you also not wear certains types of cloth that is forbidden in the same section of the Bible?” Answer: Our tattoos article clearly says that the Old Testament law doesn't apply to Christians. It says: “We know Christians who have tattoos, and think no less of them for this. The Mount Sinai law doesn't apply to Christians, and there is no compulsion for Christians not to have tattoos. Tattooing has no bearing on salvation either.” Complaint: “Piercings and tattoos don't cause cancer. Your article is a lie.” Answer: In most cases they won't cause cancer, but there is abundant evidence that in some cases you can get cancer from tattoos or piercings. The Mayo Clinic website says: “Hepatitis C is transmitted primarily through transfusions with blood that hasn't been screened for the virus, through contaminated needles used to inject drugs or, less commonly, through needles used in tattooing or body piercing.” The New Zealand Ministry of Health website says: “Some blood-borne infections you can get with tattooing and body piercing: hepatitis C — can cause long-term illness, liver damage and cancer of the liver — no immunisation, you can be infected without knowing, easily passed from person to person by invisible amounts of blood.” An Invision article on liver cancer says: “To avoid contracting Hepatitis C, which can lead to liver cancer, adhere to the following: Be cautious about blood products in certain countries; Avoid body piercing and tattooing.” Complaint: “There are no dangers in body-piercing.” Answer: The first paragraph of our piercings article gives a coroner's report about a teen in England who died after getting his lip pierced. His girlfriend became seriously ill after her piercing. If death is not a danger we don't know what is. Complaint: “I don't believe that having piercings is sinning and that it will send me to Hell.” Answer: We don't either. And our article doesn't say that. Please don't accuse us of saying things that we don't say.
