What is RSS, and what can it do for me?

RSS is a brilliant way to stay up to date with news headlines or articles from your favorite websites.

You select the sites you want to monitor. Then, when each of those sites updates articles, or new information appears on one of the sites, you can see a summary of the changes on your computer monitor whenever you are connected to the internet.

You can add, delete, or change sites at any time. If you click on a summary it takes you to the web page that has been updated.

RSS can be addictive, and you may have to limit the number of sites you track if you have a lot of news sites, such as BBC news, Reuters, or Conservative Voice. News sites update information throughout the day and night.

To get RSS on your computer, all you do is this:

  1. The easiest way is to use Internet Explorer 7. Then when you go to a page that offers RSS feeds, your browser asks if you want to subscribe (subscribing is free). If you subscribe, your browser will check that site regularly for updates. Or, you can right-click a site name in your feeds list and refresh the site any time.
  2. If you don't use Internet Explorer 7, download a free RSS feed reader from the web. We will tell you in a moment where to get one.
  3. Put the web addresses of your favorite websites (providing they offer an RSS feed) into your RSS reader. We will show you in a moment how to tell which sites provide RSS.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a simple way for websites to let people know they have added or updated information on their sites.

The Creation Tips website you are now reading offers the service. But not every website offers RSS feeds. When you add our special web address below to your RSS reader you will find out not only when we add new Christian and creationist articles and news headlines, but you will also have the opportunity to see articles that have been popular with our visitors over recent days.

We know our creation-evolution articles are controversial, so we don't mind receiving negative emails along with emails of praise (yes, really!).

Where to get an RSS reader

If you are new to RSS you will be overwhelmed with the choice of readers available. If you use the new Intenet Explorer 7 browser, it allows you to add RSS feeds right into your browser.

If you want an independent RSS reader, we suggest the two below.

Here's how to find RSS readers:

  • Go to Tucows downloads and read the reviews. (Many of these readers are not free, so if you want a free one, look in the right-hand column for the word Freeware.)
  • You can search for free RSS readers on the web (type Free RSS readers into the search box at Google for instance).
  • You can ask your friends if they use an RSS reader, and whether they can recommend one.

If you would like a simple one to play around with, try Newsplorer. The file size is small, you can move it anywhere on your computer screen, and it works on any computer that is running Windows. (To add Creation Tips to Newsplorer, see below.)

If you have Windows XP or Windows Vista, another popular and simple RSS reader is Snarfer. (To add Creation Tips to Snarfer, see below.)

Which sites provide RSS?

To see whether a site provides an RSS feed, go to the website's home page and look for this icon RSS icon, or an orange icon that says RSS. Select the icon or the words highlighted near it, and it may take you to a page full of strange coding. Ignore the coded parts of the page, and just copy the web address of the page into your RSS reader, click OK, and from then on your reader will show headlines or updates that happen on that website whenever you are connected to the internet.

To add Creation Tips to Newsplorer, click the Configure button, click the + at the right of the box, enter Creation Tips in the top line, and copy the following line into the Channel URL box (make sure there is only one http://):

http://www.users.bigpond.com/rdoolan/rss.xml

To add Creation Tips to Snarfer, click the plus sign (+) at top left, choose Folder, type in Creation and click OK. Then click the + again, choose Feed, and paste in the address given above.

Happy RSS feed-reading!
