world. Victims are being abducted, beaten, and sold for a few
dollars in the slave trade. Here is some information about what's
happening and how Christians can help fight it.
Help fight slavery and world persecution
Arab raiders kidnapped a frightened 12-year-old boy from an African village and forced him to work on a farm as a slave. One day the boy became so sick he could not work. To discipline him, his master hacked off all the fingers of the boy's hand.
Slave-traders in Sudan kidnapped a terrified mother and her infant daughter from the town of Marial Bai and put her to work as a slave. Whenever she stopped working for a moment to feed her baby with breast milk, her captors became enraged and beat her mercilessly.
Slavery is rife in many parts of the world, even though every country has officially banned it. Some estimates number slaves at almost 30 million. Intense poverty in many countries allows slave-traders to easily find and exploit vulnerable humans.
Human trafficking
The fastest growing form of slavery is human trafficking. Traffickers force and transport people — 80 per cent of whom are females — into slavery.
Most of these victims end up in the sex trade, losing any dignity they have to satisfy the lusts and debased cravings of those who fatten the pockets of organized crime figures in seedy streets and bars of the world.
Even though slaves were around in Bible times, the New Testament implies that goodwill and affection generally governed household slavery by that time. Masters were to treat slaves with restraint (Ephesians 6:9). The biblical mention of slavery gives no justification to the heartless persecution that slave-traders engage in today.
Slaves are cheap
Slaves sell in Arabian, African and Asian markets for as little as $30. For slaveholders who don't want to pay, they just have to go to a poor village and abduct someone, then beat them pitilessly to make them afraid of stepping out of line.
Join the fight against slavery
Some Christian organizations are doing remarkable work in rescuing persecuted Christians and non-Christians from slavery and other forms of oppression.
One organization is Christian Solidarity International (CSI). CSI is a Christian human rights group that helps victims of religious repression, especially persecuted Christians.
You can help CSI with your prayers and donations. Visit the Christian Solidarity International website and help make a difference by joining the fight against worldwide slavery and persecution today.
How you can help
- Pray. The gangs of slave-traders and organized crime bosses care little about their victims. Pray for those who have been forced into slavery, and undergo constant pain through beatings and oppression. Pray for the workers and groups who are making enormous sacrifices to rescue exploited slaves. Pray for the families of the victims. Pray that the victims will get relief and salvation through the ministries who tell them about Jesus Christ.
- Support Christian groups like Christian Solidarity International who put their own lives on the line to rescue victims of persecution worldwide. Donate to their vital work. The CSI website says: “Stand in solidarity with persecuted Christians and other victims of oppression. Their lives and freedom depend on you.”
- Buy anti-slavery T-shirts, bags, headbands, soccer balls, books and videos, and get your friends involved.
- Sign a petition at Anti-Slavery International to join the Fight for Freedom.
