Steve Woodcock - Trumpet

steve.jpg (2682 bytes)After an early childhood of brass bands and classical orchestras, Steve arrived in Warrnambool to play with the local brass band. He joined the local dixieland jazz group to play regularly in the local scene including the Ross Lewis Big Band which still operates on occasions. During these days (early 50's) a young drummer, Ron Sandilands, was introduced to the jazz band and became one of Melbournes in demand drummers.

Peter Salt (trumpet) was another member of the Ross Lewis Big Band on occasions. Later Steve played with the Gold Tones and helped form the Opus Six (A Terang based band).

Since coming to Geelong in the Late 80's, he helped form the Plantation Jazz Band with Eric Brown and Ian Burrows. After Ian left the band, it was renamed the Grovelanders with the addition of Rex Foord and Charles Porkingham-Smythe. Later with Barry Hirst, Bill Haldane and Kevin Simmonds joining the band, it has developed into a professional sounding   jazz band.

Steve still has connections with the brass band movement but his main love is dixieland jazz (and his lovely wife Beryl!!)
