SmartWinch and Spektrum DSM radio systems

The purpose is to assist skippers wishing to use the Spektrum DSM radio system with a SmartWinch. This applies to all Spektrum DSM radio systems including DX3, DX6 and modular systems. This is a revised version of the earlier compatibility article. Detail has now been added for those using the Alternative Connections wiring method.
What is needed to get my winch working with Spektrum? How your winch can be used with Spektrum depends on a few different factors. First select the link below depending on the type of wiring method used. If not sure look at the standard connections and alternative connections drawings.
Winch Setup Mode or tx EPA???? In many cases it will not be necessary to use setup mode to adjust travel. Overrun protection is basically obsolete with the Spektrum system as the tx/rx link is so solid. So setting tx limits is not really needed and travel may be able to be set using the tx EPA. This all depends on what the previous settings were before changing to a Spektrum tx. But DO ensure that the winch failsafe position is within the normal travel range of your boat. If the failsafe pos is outside your normal travel range then a disaster could occur should the tx/rx link be lost. All that is need to lose the link is to turn off the tx with the boat still on. Or have the boat go out of range. An example of how failsafe pos could end up outside the normal travel range is if tx/rx binding is done with the tx stick at one end and then the EPA is done to bring that end inward to set close hauled or full out positions. This will leave the failsafe position outside the normal range of travel. Best thing to do is set the failsafe pos with tx stick in the middle when binding. If you're not sure about this just ask me. Sails half out is probably a good failsafe position anyway.
