Top Right: This was the original breadboard prototype, drove a 100Watt bull light OK.
Right: A complete modulator.
Headlight Modulator. This unit modulates or pulses the headlight at a 4Hz rate. The headlight is not turned off and on, but rather it is tuned on then its intensity is somewhat reduced. This cycle is repeated 4 times a second. This rate has been determined by others to be optimal, in not being too annoying to other road users, but at the same time enhancing visibility. It certainly stands out. The modulator unit has only two wires, it is put in series with the globe. Polarity is critical. Simply cut the wire and splice in the modulator. The Modulator uses sophisticated pulse width modulation techniques, and when in circuit will reduce the total average power consumption of the globe to about 75% of normal. There are a number of options: Modulate high beam – place the modulator in the high beam wire Modulate low beam – place the modulator in the low beam wire Modulate all beams – place the modulator in the earth (return) wire To bypass/override the modulator, a toggle switch should be placed in parallel with the modulator. Closing the switch bypasses the modulator, and the headlight does not flicker, open the switch and the modulator is in the circuit and the headlight will flicker. The modulator is limited to a 100 watt globe; it will deliver 200 Watts for short periods. It could also be used in brake, flasher or other lights.
