My flutes are based around late 1820's English Classical 8-key flutes including Prowse and Rudall & Rose. Construction techniques and materials are based as close as possible to the original instruments including use of metal in the keywork and an extended seasoning period.

I originally made 3 piece flutes (head joint, body and foot) but have progressively gone to the 4 piece (two part body section) to provide more flexibility for the musician. The two part body section allows for the turning of the lower section to suit holding and sitting styles.

My default model is now the 6-keyed flute with traditional mounting blocks and long D foot  in African Blackwood or Australian Red Lancewood. Individual and lesser key options:-  long c, Bb, G#, long F, short F, Eb and the lower C and C# are available on request.

Please read a recent article in our local newpaper on my flutes.

Keys:- The keys are made with a custom alloy to resemble highly polished Nickel Silver. Keys are in the salt spoon style based on a set of keys by Wylde who was a maker with Rudall & Rose in their earlier days. Also I use steel coil type key springs as I find them more reliable.

Wood:- I have been working with African Blackwood and Australian Red Lancewood since 1994 after trialing many different varieties. The acoustic qualities coupled with workability and stability make them prime woods for flute making. Australian Red Lancewood is deep brown in colour and very beautifully grained.

Cases:- I am making cases in Australian Red Cedar (rich dark brown) and Californian Cherry (light blond brown). All cases have fitted padded lining and secure latches for added protection.
