Tech Article 002: Friction. It is the friend and enemy of every racing car. Engineers have what could only be described as a love-hate relationship with friction. Without friction, the cars would go nowhere - they would be unable to transmit acceleration through the tyres, and unable to brake or negotiate corners. The other side of the coin is that friction between moving parts of an engine, gearbox, wheel bearing or pretty much any mechanical part, reduces the efficiency of the machine. In this second technical article, we look at a recent trial conducted by Oz BOSS team Mumbo Racing on a "friction eliminator", designed to treat metal surfaces.
