After graduating with honors in Electrical Engineering from Bristol University U.K., Tony Cheshire joined Seismograph Services Ltd in 1975 as an Assistant Observer. He spent nine years with the company in the positions of Senior Observer, Party Chief and Instrument Supervisor. During three years as Instrument Supervisor he traveled extensively throughout the world to supervise technical and logistical aspects of S.S.L.s land seismic data acquisition crews, twenty nine in all located in fourteen countries.

In 1984 Tony emigrated to Australia and spent the next two and a half years working as an exploration consultant undertaking supervisory work for Pancontinental Petroleum, Sydney Oil and BP Petroleum Development in Australia and Papua New Guinea.

When the 1986 oil price crash resulted in a marked reduction in exploration activity Tony rejoined the contracting industry and spent a year with GES, an Australian company specializing in dynamite seismic surveys and which he assisted in fielding the first Vibroseis Crew. In 1988 he joined Petty-Ray as Australia Senior Field Service Engineer.

In early 1990 Tony formed Seismic Consultants Group Pty. Ltd. and has subsequently supervised crews for Petrocorp, BHP Petroleum, Command Petroleum, Santos, Magellan Petroleum, Petromer Trend, Occidental, Tecpetrol, Oil Search, Conoco, Santos and Chevron in Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), Papua New Guinea, Australia and Venezuela.

Tony's most recent project was in Papua New Guinea for Santos Asia Pacific in 1997, 98 and 99. On this 18 month project Tony held the position of Senior Client Field Representative and was responsible for the planning, formation and mobilisation of an in-house seismic crew. This crew successfully completed five surveys in the PNG Highlands, all of which were under budget and conducted without lost time injury. Following crew formation and mobilisation Tony's main responsibility was as Crew Supervisor overseeing all aspects of field crew operations and logistics together with technical aspects of crew operations and mobilisation. He also worked in the field as relief HS&E coordinator and relief Party Chief.

Tony Cheshire, Transition Zone and Shallow Marine Experience

From 1979 to 1982 Tony was Senior Observer on Seismograph Service Ltd's shallow marine crews in Nigeria. This Telseis radio telemetry crew operated throughout the Niger Delta in various river, swamp, tidal and coastal areas. A unique feature of the crew was its use of a helium balloon to elevate the recording instrument antenna to increase radio range into mangrove swamp areas.

From 1982 to 1984, as an Instrument Supervisor, Tony supervised the technical aspects of all SSL's shallow marine operations worldwide; this provided a wide variety of experience of various techniques and conditions.

Tony's most recent shallow marine project was supervision of a 460 sq km 3D crew for Conoco Venezuela in 1997. Operating in water depths from 0 to 17 meters in the Gulf of Paria and utilizing Sercel 368 technology this 10 month survey combined air gun source in deeper water, drilled Dynoseis shot-holes in shallower waters, shallow water hydrophone ramming and OBC operations.

Another notable project in recent years was supervision of a Digiseis 200 survey in the mouth of the Turama River in Papua New Guinea. This area is noted for its 8 knot currents, 7 meter tides and tidal bore.

In 1995 Tony spent a period of five weeks as a company representative on a deep marine seismic vessel operating in the Java Sea north of Australia.
