About My Fanfic
Ship
Most of my stories fall into either the 'ship' or 'gen' categories.
Which is to say that they are either focused on a male/female pairing,
or without a pairing at all.
There's a lot of fuss in the Stargate SG-1 fandom about what constitutes
the definition of 'ship', particularly when it comes to the canonically
encouraged relationship between Colonel Jack O'Neill and Major Samantha
Carter of SG-1. When it comes to fanfic, I tend to take the view
that if the focus of the interaction between the two is not romantic
or does not regard their emotional relationship, then it's not 'ship'.
Since I approach the show from the angle that there are
feelings between O'Neill and Carter, and that they are merely keeping
them quiet for the time being, my genfic will fully recognise that
they have 'feelings' for each other and that they care about each
other. The stories will not always feature "soap opera"
interactions, but they will feature them caring about each other
as team-mates and friends do.
I make zero apologies for writing canonical characterisation.
Homophobia
It's come to my notice that certain areas of the fandom have labelled
me a homophobe based on a comment I made regarding the 'convenient
rearranging' of character sexuality to suit the writer's own preferences
for the character. I stated that turning heterosexual characters
homosexual was a perversion of their depicted sexuality.
What the screechers failed to take into account was the subsequent
comment: that turning homosexual characters heterosexual was also
a perversion of their depicted sexuality. Were I to write fic in
the Buffy-verse, Willow would be bi-sexual, presently lesbian, and
Tara would be lesbian.
None of the guys on SG-1 are homosexual. None of them have been
shown to be bisexual. It is possible that any of them could
be bisexual, but it is not canon that 'Jack and Daniel are soul
mates'. It's not canon that Jack and Sam are soul mates either.
Are people allowed to write slash? Sure they are! Just don't tell
me it's canon when it's arrantly clear that it's not. Could
they be bisexual? Yes. But they aren't depicted that way on the
show. Default depiction is heterosexuality, and yes, that is the
way it is.
And, for the record, I write slash. I just do it under a psudonym
and I don't boast about it. However, my slash fics have been recommended
by others - ironically, by some of the same people calling me a
homophobe.
Oh, for the whole picture...
About the fandom
As anyone who's been in the Stargate SG-1 fandom for more than
a month, things are not all hunky-dory around here.
People seem intent on drawing lines around Stargate SG-1 - "It's
only for the people who want Daniel on SG-1", "It's only
for the people who want to see more TEAM", "It's only
for people who love the Jack/Daniel relationship."
Personally, I like the team - all four or five members of SG-1
working together, the parts creating synergy where the whole is
more than the sum of its parts. I like Daniel, he's just not my
favourite character or the star of the show. I like Jonas, and I
enjoy the more open team-interaction he brought to SG-1 in Season
Six. My teamfic always involves all four characters playing an active
and necessary part in the storyline - if it doesn't, it's not true
teamfic.
Yes, Jack and Sam are my favourite characters, it helps that the
show drifted in the direction of Sam/Jack ship, and I don't see
a problem with them operating together. This is a fantasy-sci-fi
show. In the real world, the Colonel would fly a desk, Daniel would
rarely be allowed off-world and only onto planets categorised as
'safe', Sam would be the same - too valuable to lose on a mission,
and Teal'c and Jonas would have been locked up by the NID pronto.
Yes, I'm a member of the Sam-Jack Horsewomen. And whatever you're
thinking about us as a group, you're wrong. Kindly go here
and set yourself straight. We're heavy in the Sam-Jack shippers
department, but we have a broad cross-section of people from all
different areas of fandom and we don't claim to speak for the whole
fandom...we just point out the holes of logic in other areas of
the fandom. Our motto is that the show belongs to TPTB, and they
are always right, even when we don't like it.
Now, go forth and explore the fandom for yourself.
