Displacement
He wandered along the corridors of the SGC, steaming cup in hand, feeling like a monkey stuck on an icy mountain and wondering what he was doing here. Had it been worth it? Some would have said yes. Others might have disagreed. He still wasn't sure. The sense of displacement was constant. So much new, so much changed, so much which would never be the same. People like continuity, he thought to himself, trying to reconcile the feelings which had been assaulting him since he came through the Stargate yesterday afternoon. All anyone ever wants is for things to stay the same... But change rolled on, inexorable as time, unstoppable as life. You moved with the times, rolled with the punches, rode the wave - or you drowned in the flood. And right now, it seemed he was barely keeping his head above water. Maybe it was just the readjustment to Earth's conditions. To being immured beneath the mountain because he didn't exist here legally. He wondered about those he'd left behind. Would they erase his name from their ranks for his perceived betrayal? Would his memory be forever tainted in their thoughts? Somehow, that idea was hard to bear. The others had offered what help they could, but he could see the truth in their eyes. He was an outsider to them. Too much had changed in a short space of time and they were all dealing with the consequences. His feet made their way inexorably to a single door. Familiar and yet strangely unfamiliar. He took out his newly-issued pass, paused it at the top of the card-reader... And put the card away, shaking his head. No. It wasn't his lab. Two steps away from the door, it opened behind him and someone stepped out into the corridor. They looked at each other, blue eyes meeting blue eyes. Jonas Quinn looked like he didn't know what to say about Daniel wandering about the base at one in the morning. Daniel didn't know what to say to the man who'd been working with SG-1 since Daniel left. Then Jonas lifted his cup, similarly steaming but without the pushy aroma of coffee, "Care to go for a walk, Dr. Jackson?" Uncertainty lingered in the Kelownan's expression and Daniel felt a rush of sudden kinship with the man standing hesitant in the doorway of what had once been Daniel's office. Maybe he wasn't the only one displaced. "Okay." * | ||
