The Bundaberg Municipal Band was formed with the amalgamation of the Excelsior and City Bands in 1935. Both Bands had just respectively won D Grade and C Grade Australian Championships (held in Bundaberg). Our current Life Patron, CCA Wendt, was one of the architects of the Bundaberg Municipal Band. The services of the renowned JJ Kelly were acquired and under his baton the Band won the B Grade Queensland Championships in 1938 and A Grade the following year. In the early 1940's the Band fell into recess as a result of war activities. On reforming in 1946/47 they entered as a C Grade Band and by 1951 the Band moved into B Grade. The Band has since won four B Grade Championships.

Robert Rotar has been Musical Director since 1989. He held the title of State Tenor Trombone Champion in 1993 and 2000. Robert regularly competes and encourages all players to extend their playing through participation in solo and ensemble competitions. Since 1991 Robert has also conducted the Bundaberg Youth Orchestra, considered one of the best regional youth orchestras in Australia. In 1998 he was a finalist in the Westfield Young Conductor Competition and the following year was presented with the Bundaberg City Council's Cultural Award.

Of recent years the Band has enjoyed a strong following, and provides a No. 2 Band, and Training Band to groom new players. The No. 2 Band regularly competes in D Grade Competitions. The Bands consist of very dedicated musicians, some of whom play in both Bands, as well as assisting with the Training Band. The Band prides itself on providing a supportive environment where all players are valued.
