Our beautiful greys

Being a mum of two young children I knew that when I chose to get a dog it would have to be great with my kids. I didn’t have a particular breed in mind until that fateful day at Carisbrooke Park where they were holding vets and pets in the park. Some wonderful volunteers had two greyhounds there and after asking a few questions and spending only a few minutes with these beautiful animals I’d changed my mind forever. That was three and a half years ago and it has been a very long and very hard wait but over the past few months while waiting for our first dog to arrive I have read countless articles and probably driven a few people crazy asking all sorts of questions. Do they need a lot of exercise, are they good at jumping fences, what’s the best way to work out how much to feed them and many more questions besides. I am really looking forward to having a greyhound as our new family member. I didn’t want a dog that would live it’s life out in the backyard I wanted one that would be a part of our family and get lots of love and attention.

A lot of thank’s must go to you Fran for your time and patience and for answering all of my silly questions and a very big thankyou for passing your G.O.D (Greyhound Obssesive Disorder) on to me. Also to Jillian from GAP in South Australia for all her help also.

Even though Smokey is our first new family member I know that in the very near future he will have another grey to keep him company. I’ve been told that owning a greyhound is like eating potato chips you just can’t stop at one.

Our boy Smokey formerly known as Elders Boy

Smokey has been a member of our family for eight months now and considering he finished his racing career in June of last year and had never seen the inside of a house until then he has adapted very well indeed, you would think he had lived in one all his life.  He loves it when Samantha has food because if he waits long enough she always manages to drop some but he loves trying all sorts of new things. One of his favourites at the moment is spaghetti bolognese and he likes Peanut Paste on toast for breakfast instead of his usual cheese on toast. Even though he listens and does the things I tell him to he loves it when my husband comes home from work at night because Richard will make a fuss of him and I suppose through his racing career he mainly dealt with men. He is still getting the occasional bowl of ice cream and lots of other special treats too.
