Colonial arabians

STUD OBJECTS

The stud was officially commenced in 1999 by retired endurance rider, Catherine McAlpine of Albury NSW, with the lease of 4 purebred arabians from the Cudglebar Stud, and the accumulation of suitable derivative breeding stock.

The stud is founded on the bloodlines of Les Ellery's Cudglebar Stud (est. 1930). It has 3 distinct breeding programs. The stud exsists to guarantee the continued existence of a sustainable genetic pool of arabian 'old colonial' bloodlines in Australia.    Old colonial arabians are those directly descended from a group of horses imported into Australia around 70 years ago.  Typically they are small, compact, hardy horses of substantial bone.  They were bred as working horses and are quite different in type from the modern day show arabian.

The second breeding program is to develop family groups of arabian derivatives that are based on old colonial lines but are suitable for a variety of disciplines and for those who require a taller mount. Horses of the various family groups can then be bred to the others to continue to infuse the colonial blood while achieving vigour though the total outcross of non-arab mares.

In 2005 the third element of the stud was added with the registration of the stud prefix 'Piney Range'. This prefix will be used exclusively for the stud's part standardbred stock. Hopefully this program will include coloured standardbreds but it's a little slow getting started.

The main niche of the stud is expected to be endurance riding, harness and pleasure horses. The stud now has in excess of 50 horses including purebreds, anglos, arabian warmblood and standardbred arab / anglo crosses.
