Meeting with Brys, Moiraine discovers that Lan is the uncrowned king of Malkier. She
encounters Merean arriving at the palace. Moiraine goes to see Lan, and asks him to
watch Merean; he agrees to ask Bukama.
In her rooms, Moiraine talks with Iselle, who wants to go to the Tower. Moiraine sends
her away. Siuan spends the rest of the day investigating, and returns at night to
report that Merean has spent almost the entire day with Prince Brys, and that Ines'
son Rahien was born one day after the Aiel started their retreat from Tar Valon. |

Merean attempts to kill Lan with the Power. He survives, but finds that Bukama has been
killed. Moiraine realises that Merean is Black Ajah.
Lan and Moiraine confront Merean, and discover that Ryne is also a Darkfriend. Merean
kills Diryk and Brys before being killed in turn by Moiraine. Iselle falls to her death.
Lan wins his duel to the death with Ryne. Afterwards, Moiraine destroys the bodies and
other evidence of the fight. |

With the Aesdaishar Palace in mourning, Edeyn retires into seclusion. Moiraine destroys
Merean's belongings. After telling Moiraine that Rahien is not the child they are
searching for, Siuan realises that the Black Ajah is searching for and killing any
man who might be able to channel. Moiraine convinces Siuan to go back to the Tower.
Moiraine rides out after Lan, and catches up to him on the road north of the city. He
agrees to be her Warder, and she bonds him. They ride off together, to continue the
search for the Dragon Reborn. |
