Once upon a time, every writer and their dog had an 'all new' team of mutants, most of whom weren't all that new in essence. Too often, they seemed like pale imitations of the existing x-teams, but the ever-surprising Abyss managed to pull off the trick. It's a great pity he never wrote any more about this crew, but what exists is entertaining.
When you get right down to it, this is a Mary Sue. But it's a Mary Sue good enough to transcend the genre. The lead character, Jessica Pierce, joins the New Mutants during Magneto's tenure as head master. Only she has a mysterious grudge against him ... This was one of the first X-Men stories published online, and it's a dinosaur of the genre in the best possible way. The leading lady never steals the limelight from the well-drawn canon characters, and the whole thing is a blast.
This is an interesting way to tell a story - use an original character to give us a new perspective on a Marvel stalwart. The narrator knew Jean Grey when she was just a high school cheerleader who was nice to him.
Rogue isn't the only mutant who has trouble with touch. Asha Joy has the power to see the future of anyone she comes into contact with ... but more often than not, she prefers not to use it. That isn't easy to do when you meet the X-Men, however. The sequels, part of a longer planned series, are here.
Another story set during Magneto's time as headmaster of the New Mutants, which finds Logan and Erik rescuing a young mutant who's been locked away in the basement by her own parents. When they find out what her power is, though, they begin to wonder if there's a better solution ... I liked this story a lot, although its impact was damaged by my personal conviction that the lead character's power isn't that awful. Somehow I doubt that Magneto would think it was awful at all. The writing remains excellent, regardless.
Written for the self-insertion challenge, this story finds M ... er, I mean, Naomi applying for a position as Hank McCoy's lab assistant. Let's just say that she's a far cry from your typicle Mary Sue x-woman, and both amusing and engaging :). The sequels are Winning Bets and The Land of the Beautiful People.
Sometimes, the new character who joins the X-Men isn't quirky, original and interesting. Sometimes he's just a big old Marty Stu of the worst kind. Sometimes, a writer takes a fanfic legendary in its badness and redeems it through MSTing. Don't worry if you don't know anything about Mystery Science Theater 3000 - Kielle has it all explained for you in the story. Just sit back and laugh. Be warned, however, that there is a sequel.
